MG MGB Technical - 1980 hood and screen on 1965 roadster

Good afternoon.

I have a MK1 1965 roadster. Nearby there maybe a 1980 roadster that is an abandoned resto project. I was wondering if anyone knew if the the floding hood arrangement could be fit to a MK 1 - is it just a case of fixing the new frame to the existing packaway hood mounts?

Also, are the windscreens and frames a match as my screen has a crack and I would like to fit a new screen to a different frame and have it ready to swap the whole frame over rather than risk being without the car for weeks on end whilst I get the frame and screen re-assembled!

Thanks for any help

Chris

Chris,

We put the latest type of folding hood on our 1963 Roadster two years ago. It was a perfect fit, no trouble. Highly recommended!

C, paint the frame grey and few will even notice the change, except you, who will know why they redesigned it. RIC

Thanks for that gents, unfortunately the source of a cheap frame and hood dissapeared but I will keep an eye out for one as I really fancy a foldable roof for the summer, but want to keep my packaway one for originality at shows!

Thanks

Chris, if you want originality, go for the earlier "folding" Frame, (Grey) which was an optional extra.
Known also as the "scissors" frame. It has a much flatter profile and IMHO looks better on the car. In the later one, the rearmost rib is higher than the middle & front rail, & gives a cocked up appearance.
It will be noticed by real enthusiasts of the marque.
See if you can spot it in file pics, mags & ads.
Also note the hood is not interchangable, & sometimes people order the wrong hood & wonder why it doesn't fit snugly on the frame. All the frames fit all the cars though.

thanks for that, I will keep my eye out for one

A late model frame will be easier to find [more were made and they are afterall newer] and they are a better design. If you keep the packaway for shows and use the late model folder for everyday you will like the way it works and if you paint it grey it will look right to most onlookers. RIC
