MG MGB Technical - 67 wiper drive gear NLS

After working perfectly for 2000 miles in pouring rain when we did the Berlin rally last year the wipers jammed on Wednesday.
Taking the load off by removing the arms let them park and run fine.
The drive gear on the motor sounds very noisy and I was going to rebuild it as well as clean lubricate replace as needed in the rack, but on the Moss site GHN3 6917 Drive gear is NLS. I may not need it when I get in there, but has anyone else found a source for this part? i would like to keep the Mk I single speed wiper arrangment.

You'll most likely have to source a second hand unit as these wiper motors have been unavailable for quite some time. My '67 wipers work just fine, but I didn't use them for over 25 years due to the fact that the car wasn't driven in the rain. A local auto breakers yard should be able to help you find a replacement motor. RAY

Thanks, although early soft top cars seem to be being recommisioned rather than scrapped now. B+G show a recon unit, but minus that gear.

Are you sure it's the gear that is the problem? Given the relative sizes of the worm on the motor shaft and the gear I'd have said it was more likely for the worm to wear.

The other thing is that on the later 2-speed at least the positioning of the shaft is set by a screw at the end, if that is allowing the shaft to wobble that could allow it to jump teeth.

Stan,

Use it or lose it! Only joking, sorry that we wore your wipers out last year...

The gear must be standard Lucas issue. I rebuilt my motor a few years ago using Hillman Imp parts. I can't remember which bits came from which motor but the car was an F-reg.

Thanks guys, useful tip about generic Lucas parts Mike and as Paul notes once I get it apart I will see whats really needed. It may be that a new "snake" will run so smoothly the worm drive shuts up.
So far I have just oiled the wheelboxes and its a lot better even dragging the blades across a dry screen (very briefly!)
Re the rain killing them last year, they only went on in Dec 66 and despite being greased twice are playing up. When you write to Abingdon to complain they just ignore you :-)

Never met a bad gear. Usually it is the drive tubes loose or bent/dented, motor bearings, or just general lubrication. Various electrical faults like worn brushes and commutator can also make noise.

I've had a few MGB with the wiper motor full of water! That was the result of bad repairs when installing the wing, on later cars.

The motors are all the same, and the gear varies by application. Degrees of sweep is changed by moving the eccentric anchor offset for each sweep, which is marked on the gear. So Service Parts were supplied as motor without gear, and you usually used the old gear.

Some cars went through changes of sweep as production went on, which may or may not need different arms etc. I do not know if there were any changes on this series of cars. But if necessary, you can usually find a gear with a close sweep if you cannot get the "right" one.
