MG MGB Technical - Air filters

Hi folks, to carry on from the last thread, where I talk about putting a 12V battery under the bonnet (right hand corner) to do this I need to replace the old style air filters, the long pipe end gets in the way, I think it needs to be the pancake type to give me room for the battery, can anyone suggest what type of pancake filter to use, I've seen thin ones about Ģ30 and K&N thicker ones about Ģ80?

Cheers Jack.

Air filters, filter air? Yes I am stating the obvious, but in this day and age of 'bling', sometimes we have sacrificed the filtering for what looks good or what fits! Have a look at Stephen Strange's section of air filters in the 'Book'. K&N are probably the best for filtartion and air flow, will they fit your bill? I do not know. The narrow pancake will certainly give you the room, but the cost of filtration efficiency, air flow might suffer, and you will lose the radiused ring just at the inlet throat of the carbs, not good for air flow. Small radiused rams can fit inside the K&N filters. Mike

Jack,

I think this style of K&N might help

or may be the somewhat more inexpensive ones more common on Triumphs but they can be fitted with the MG SU filter adapters inside

Use the fattest ones you have room for. The thin ones will definately be restrictive and cost you power and poor running. Surely you could use the K&Ns with the deep cylindrical filters and cover plate.

Jack - I've got cone types on mine - the K&Ns similar to those that Ralph shows in his second pic wouldn't fit on mine (they hit the servo).

Mine aren't K&Ns - Simota make them.

Thanks Ralph and John for the images, some good ideas there, I'll progress looking for some K&N's

cheers Jack.

Fit K & N and donīt forget to fit an intake trumpet inside the filter base, like on the original filters!

Thanks for the info guys, Hi Joern, thanks for your info, not sure what you mean, can you explain a bit better or a pic, I'm going ahead with your idea of the 12V battery conversion under the bonnet, also while I do this I think it would make sense to fit an alternator instead of present dynamo, can you suggest what alternator to get?

cheers Jack.
Jack New Forest

Jack,
I used the K&N pancake filters, but I? cut a bogger hole in the back plate and fitted the original filter base castings with the nicely rounded entrance on the OUTSIDE of the filter. 104 RWHP on Peter Burgess's rolling road, so I don't think they are restricting things too much.

That might be "bigger" hole. Sorry about that!

Happy New Year everyone.

Jack,
I just use a Lucas alternator from a later B. Depending on your engine block you may even have the fixings for either alternator or dynamo, they need different fixing brackets.

It's lucky you went one key to the right and not to the left!
