MG MGB Technical - Alternator Output
Hi All I put a digi meter on the battery terminals while the engine was running and got a fairly steady reading of about 13.6v but every few seconds it would give a momentary blip to 16 or 17 volts, have I got a problem or should I just live with it. Ron

I would say its a problem. I think there was a post somewhere on this forum where an alternator was putting out 16 volts and was faulty. It may be the start of the end!

I would guess that your voltage regulator is about to fail. I know on the 1972, it can be changed rather easily. Just remove the alternator, it is under the plastic cover.

Thanks for the info, I chickened out and bought a recon alternator. Ron

and did the problem go away?

Yes it did, I'm not sure how much of a problem it was but I'm due to go a touring holiday in the car so I'm looking for peace of mind. I looked into replacing the regulator but for all the extra it was I was as well buying a reconditioned unit. Ron
