MG MGB Technical - Anyone had good rear springs?
I might have to replace the rears on my GT soon and am aware I'm entering a lottery for the final ride height. Anyone had some turn out good lately from a UK dealer? Many thanks

Steve, after trying the regular quality i ordered springs out of the competition catalogue from Moss. Thay have the normal springs reworked and sell them as competition springs. I tried them last year and they are good quality and there was no problem with different hight. The other springs i changed before were normal ones, not worth P&P! Ralph

there was a thread on here recently about Jones Springs http://jones-springs.co.uk/ they seemed to get a good review Dave

Good luck! Maybe Engel Imports?

Doug Jackson may have some composite springs left for sale. Although English, he resides here in California. His composites are pricey, but impressive enough for me to do 3 full sets. They are available in 3 different stiffs to boot: British Automotive, Novato, Ca., USA

Had a good pair recently from MGB Hive which resulted in approx 14 1/2" rear ride height. No idea however who they were manufactured by

Over the years I've had great luck with a local spring shop, replace both or have them match the sag of the originial, unbroken side check around you may find one near you. RIC

I got a good set recently for my GT...got them from the local MG parts importer, so am not sure where he gets them from - but will ask & let you know!
Curtis Walker
Thanks! Im waiting for a call from Jones Springs and will see what they say. Steve

Steve, I presently have my GT rear springs back at Jones Springs for some 're-work' it turned out that their tapering machine was duff, hence the springs delivered to me last year were too thick resulting in a spring rate of 156lbs, the result was that the car sat too high. I must say that so far they have been very good about sorting it out, but i'm still got a due date of another 4 weeks.

I fitted replacement springs from a local MG supplier but after two years the driver's side has already sagged. I believe there is discussion in the archives about dodgy aftermarket springs. I'm now going to have the originals reset by a spring shop in the hope that their heat treatment will be better than the aftermarket units. David

David, That's not what I wanted to hear, since mine have only been on a few months, and I suspect that being in the same part of the world the supplier may be the same. Are you sure the springs you replaced are 'originals'? Oh, and how heavy are you? ;-)
Curtis Walker
Curtis, Good point - I'm not sure the springs I replaced are original, but at least if I have them reset by someone who knows what they are doing then the heat treatment should be correct. Can't guarantee they are the correct grade of steel however, without an analysis. As to my weight, 80 kg; however when I first noticed this problem I was following my wife as she drove the B. I did not comment for several weeks in the interest of domestic harmony, until I noticed that it was sagging when she was not in it! David

I bought a standard pair from Midlands Sports and classics. I understand they are made somewhere in the Black Country. I'm very plaesed with the ride height, a couple of inches higher than the originals, but thats why I changed them. They didn't sag too much fully laden on our trip to france last year. http://www.mggallery.co.uk/lemans2006.html
