MG MGB Technical - Axle rebound straps (2)

Question for my Aussie mates.

Can someone tell me where I can source some quality straps?
I have had two sets recently from different large suppliers, both appear to have been made from chewing gum. When I called one today I got a very indifferent reponse!

I mainly use Heritage MG in Sydney - excellent service and all parts available (mostly!).

I have had a brand new strap fail but it was immediately replaced.

Peter,

I am finding that the straps I have purchased from the locals including Heritage MG stretch approx 50mm when I jack the car on the body, allowing the axle to hang on the straps. If the worst happened and the car bounced the sudden load on the strap would cause another (say) 20mm.
The old straps which I removed because they were cracked have zero stretch.
To me this means that the axle is falling 70mm more than MG intended. This could cause grief for the shock absorber, spring shackles or in my instance the underslung exhaust. Which is how I found the problem.

Have you checked your car, I am on my third set of straps

Ok, I'll make some comments here. I have used Heritage for a major proportion of parts I have fitted to my car. Sports Parts, Sydney , have also been frequently engaged, with excellent outcomes. My experience of Heritage, and particularly, of a contact I was using there, accords with Peter's assessment. However, a set of rebound straps I received from them were not up to the mark. Somewhat thinner and narrower than the originals I took off the car (boy, were they tired), they simply stretched, and just seemed to keep on stretching.

In the event I went to a local MG/Rover dealer (now closed) for a set of straps which were very much more substantial. They have a minimum of stretch past the drop length and resemble the replaced originals, most notably in containing a form of webbing within the rubber compound - a characteristic the Heritage set did not exhibit.

You might do better to contact some of the specialist MG dealers in Melbourne/SA/Sports Parts to see what they have.

I might point out that, should ever my set of straps be asked to perform at their extreme of length, I will already have enjoyed the sounds associated with kissing goodbye to my exhaust pipe.

I got some from this person, I think they may be one of the best options out there. There seems to be a real quality problem with the rubber straps that are out there. I have had them on my car for 1 year now, and they are holding up so far. However, I only drive my car about once a week, rarely in the rain, and never in winter, so my testimonial as to product quality may not be really strong, but I think others have found them to be of much better quality that the ones being supplied through the usual channels.

Ditto on BrokenHeartStudios, aka The Strapping Lad.

I have his rebound straps on my B/GT.

Hi Terry
I'm away at the moment but will check my straps and measure the stretch in a couple of days and let you know. I must say that I don't recall seeing any webbing running thru the new ones - all my old OE ones certainly do.

Hi Terry
I have just measured the amount of stretch in my rebound straps once I take the weight of the car off the wheels (axle) - ie. allow the axle and wheels to hang off the springs. The stretch length is only 5mm - these straps having been purchased from Heritage MG.
Kind regards

Hello Peter,
Mine were from Heritage, and I tried two sets from another supplier, good to know yours are OK. There seems to be some quality issues.
I am a big fan of Heitage and don't like to think of how much I have spent with them, I have found quality and service both normally very good

I am taking advice from our Canadian and US friends, and ordered a set of the "Strapping Lad" type.

I just ordered three sets from the Strapping Lad today..one for each of the MGCs and one for the MGB tourer.

He also does seat belt rewebbing.

Hmmm, hope he does them to different specs ...
