MG MGB Technical - bottom trunnion seal

This is a question mainly for you chaps in the US,do you have access to any good quality bottom trunnion seals, every one i have bought from here in britain is just rubbish, in the picture (new seals on the right) you can see what is happening to these seals, after a few months they swell up and stretch, and allow dirt into the bottom trunnion,if you do, can you please supply me with an address, many thanks. A.T

I bought some from MGOC and TBH they didn't impress me.

I fitted a NOS QH kingpin kit, which had some new seals (some were missing) and I re-used some of the old ones, which I fitted about 20 years ago.

As no one has replied, do I take it that every one has the same problem, and good quality seals are unavailable anywhere, Thanks A.T

I think moss motors in the us should have good ones. I have the same issue with ones I got in the uk. I haven't tried contacting moss motors here to see if they have good ones.

This article about the mga is interesting. The seals used are the same as on the b.

I cannot answer what Moss has currently available. But, the last time I rebuilt the suspension, the Moss supplied lower seals lasted eight months before splitting.

SAME OLD, SAME OLD..................RUBBISH PARTS, ESPECIALLY RUBBER ITEMS. Just grease .....OFTEN. I grease mine every month or so, irrespective of the condition of the seals.
Allan Reeling

Allan i am looking for a more permanent repair, rather than having grease all over the place, if there are no better parts available, then i may have to rethink, my plans, A.T

Hi Andy

I received 4 of these seals today from Moss. Already fitted so I hope they last or I will be spitting mad. The old ones were rotten, but as I only bought the car a year ago I do not know the history.

Ronnie did you happen to notice if they have RN-0994 embossed on them. It's these onse that seam to be the problem.

I notice from the picture Andy posted his new ones do.
Andrew Horrocks

I have ended up changing these seals every few months, and in that time have had ones with RN-0994 embossed on them, and ones with nothing on them, and I have found no difference in any of them, A.T

Not changed any recently, only changed one set on each car with the swivel axle, the other set on each car as as they came to me 23 and 17 years ago. The grease should keep most of the water and dirt out, I've not had a problem with wear or siezing, they get greased once a year, do about 2-3k, a fair amount of which are wet miles. having said that most rubber parts these days are truly rubbish compared to originals, and that includes rear brake slave seals.
Paul Hunt

Hi Andrew

Unfortunately I only saw the post on the rubbers after I had fitted them so I have no idea about the numbers.

No worries Ronnie. By the sounds of it now they are all rubbish anyway.

I might go see if i retained the original ones. I don't think they were they bad when i replaced them.
Andrew Horrocks

The new extra MOT regs also now refer to dust covers preventing ingress of dirt (?egress of grease). This refers to ball joints (so includes track rod end covers) but I suspect may get misinterpreted to include the lower trunnion pin seals. However if sufficient grease is oozing out it will prevent dirt getting in......time for an argument!

Moss in the UK now do a new seal which is made from neoprene, This has superseded the old type which is now no longer available from Moss, I have just bought 4 and are about to fit them, the new part number is AAA1323X, which is the same as the old part number, but with the X on the end, the cost of these new type of seals is £1-25p each, lets hope they last a bit longer than the others, A.T
