MG MGB Technical - Camshaft (followers, etc)

You may have seen in an earlier thread "Dyno" I mentioned that I needed to replace my BMC 770 profile camshaft after some excessive wear to both the cam and followers (lifters). I have gone for the cam known here as the Turkish Delight (see note from our club visit to the local supplier)

I am now chasing 18V shaped followers +60 Rockwell C preferably without the hole. Does anyone have any comment on various Moss US options that vary from US$46 to US$200 a set?

Interestingly the APT tappet set (63 Rc) from Moss is US$190 but from APT direct it is US$130! Are these the same product?

The 18V followers are the same as the A-series. What do Mini racers use?

I have been using APT parts for several years and have nothing but praise for their products
These guys really know their stuff and only sell the type of parts that you like to get in the mail -They have been involved in Mini development for longer than my memory goes back and their service / honesty is second to none
Their ordering system-from Australia, used to be a bit of a nuisance , but now that they do Paypal on line it's great and fast
I have ordered from here on Saturday evening- Saturday morning over there and received my package on the Thursday down here in Tas. --takes some beating that
Give Clive a bell, I'd imagine he would have nothing but praise for their products / service as well.
In saying this, some of their parts can be a tiddle expensive but it looks like you're onto a good deal
willy

Rude question- What grind have you decided to go for on your new stick--I take it that Clive had an influence in your decision---- just interested, that's all and did you find any other numbers on the old cam to identify it against that spec card you had or was it indeed a 770 after all
William Revit

As Willy said APT direct or from MOSS. + 60 and great quality. Not too expensive. They are spot on in shape and really last. Denis

Willy,
I went for the same grind as Clive had done previously (#398) that is very similar to the BLMC 770. We are convinced my old cam was an original BLMC 770 before the last grind. Timing 45/75/75/45 and lobe lift is almost the same as 770 cams on the Piper and Kent web sites and table in Peter Burgess book (attached). Clive suggested I use the +60 Rc followers after my recent trouble with standard followers.
We still don't know what the cause of the cam failure was. Clive suspected spring bind but we have checked springs and there is still 0.100" travel left at full lift. Paul Walbran suggested that I may have been running too much rocker clearance but Kent, Piper, BLMC and Clive reckon on 0.018" plus 14% for the high ratio rockers (see his article)

My machinist thinks it might be oil quality issues. Anyway we will see how it goes when I get it back together.

Hi Mike
I'd been thinking spring binding or bottoming out on the guide as well but if you have a genuine 100th you should be ok there
This leaves, maybe oil but probably not--
Too heavy valve springs, keeping in mind that the higher the rocker ratio is the more load on the lobe there is as well---and
when you fit your new followers, make sure they can spin freely in their bores--they need to be really free spinning to avoid premature wear
What oil have you been using--

I have been using Penrite HPR30 but thinking of going to Joe Gibbs oil.

To be honest most failures we see are caused by poor running in. We use a moly paste on the followers and lobes and run em for around 10 mins at 2000 rpm. Remember cams are splash fed.

HPR 30 is fairly heavy at 20w60 which might have a little bit to do with the gear wear on your old cam ,
but plenty of people are using it though
I'm a bit of a Castrol 0-40 Edge fan but don't have anything to offer to back up my choice . It's just personal choice and I can run it in everything, My diesel Golf loves it, the turbo spins up noticeably quicker than it does on the OEX 5-30 oil recomended for it, and same goes for my son's turbo Mazda
just sayin

Mike I use Pentite Classic Light in my supercharged B and when we pulled it down at 100K miles the cam and lifters could have easily gone again. Pentite has much higher ZDDP content than most other performance oils. Denis

Peter, you could be right but I did take great care to run it in properly - used Comp Cams lube and ran for twenty minutes at 2000 rpm on starting the 350 kms of tfaffic driving with alot of rpm variation. It did take awhile to get up oil pressure initially, may be a couple of 15 sec bursts even though had primed pump by back filling down the oil cooler feed line. What is your recommendation for cam moly paste?
Mike

My favourite as folk dont seem to sell it nowadays is a Suzuki product for bike assembly,

Thanks Peter, fortunately I am in Japan next week so will pick up some while there.
