MG MGB Technical - Camshaft Suppliers

Recently I saw a posting that said Piper was no longer shipping to the US. Today on the General MGB BBS there was a posting that Crane cams has shutdown..probably for good.

So, what's left as supply both as original spec cams and performance ones?

There are stock cams sold by Moss/VB etc. Don't know whose these are or the quality. VB offers Kent cams but they are $$$ and I saw some complaints in the archives.

My 65 has had its cam reground to original 1965 specs which has been okay. I suspect it's getting ready for replacement along with cam followers.

With the economy sliding into an abyss, some suppliers will close their doors, at least for a while. Kent makes an excellent product and I have been running one in my B for 16 years with no complaints. If you search hard enough, you will find a supplier with some camshafts left in its inventory of various makes. RAY

As of yet there's no indication that Crane has gone under. They may be relocating production to an area where costs are lower, such as their branch facility in Daytona, Florida.

Doug Jackson promotes Elgin cams on his page http://www.mgbmga.com
Just have a look there and read about it. There is also a hotlink to Elgin with further interesting information to be read.

Concerning Crane, I just read about an investor that will run Crane further on under new management.
May be they will clear off the range in the future but you should contact them and ask for availble stocks that meet your desire, as long as they have not cleared out their range in future.
May be Kent Cams will still ship their products to the US, although it seems Piper has more advanced gids, as long as you do not considre a throughout racing cam.

If you are fixed to a Piper cam, just contact Chris Betson at Octarine services or Peter Burgees. They sould be able to ship cams to the US still, I think.

Thanks for the input. Here's the link to the newspaper report. Sounds like the whole company closed.

Hi all

I rang Piper today and they still send cams abroad, so all is well.

Don't forget Dave Anton at APT is making great cams in his own facility in Riverside, CA.

I got the cam for my Spridget from David Anton at APT. I don't know enough to pick a cam based on the spec sheet, so I told him what I was doing to the engine and how I wanted it to act, and asked him to pick a cam for me.

It performed exactly the way I had specified. I could not have been more pleased.

Charley, I am building a Spridget engine. What did you do to the engine and which cam did he send you?
Daniel Strange

Daniel,

Following is a short summary of the engine. I have a bit more info if you want it, but it is too much to paste in here. The cam I used was the VP7. Part of the requirement was that it rev freely to 7000, have low end torque since I don't have a 1st gear syncro, and that it not power peak too high. I ended up with a VP7. The engine was built for autocross, but I think it would be streetable. Here are some of the specs. Also, I threw in a pic of the car.
