MG MGB Technical - Clutch hose too short

Has anyone had a problem with this before? I'm replacing the rubber hose to the slave cylinder on my 74 MGB and it's too short by about half and inch. I can make it fit but it would be extremely tight and pulling on the metal collar on the slave cylinder end.

It's a Delphi/Lockheed hose Moss part number 180-820. It's made in the UK by the Rover Group part #LH5136.

The hose measures 9 3/8" from end to end of the metal threaded fittings. To be a good fit with a little slack it would need to be about one inch longer. Moss sells and aftermarket hose and also a braided hose does anyone know if these are longer.

Thanks

Are you certain that you have mounted it in the correct hole in the slave cylinder? It goes in the lower hole. Most new slave cylinders are shipped with the bleeder screwed into the wrong hole because they fit in the box without poking a hole in it. RAY

I can confirm rjm Ray's comment as found the same with a replacement slave cylinder i fitted a couple of years ago.

Ray, many thanks you were quite right I had the hose in the bleeder hole. Now it fits perfectly in the correct location. I must admit to feeling pretty stupid about this all I had to do was check on my 2 other MGs. Oh well it's back on the road now.

Thanks again,

Andy, Don't feel bad. You would think that the manufacturers could come up with a solution to this problem. By making their boxes slightly larger, they could eliminate this concern for good. RAY

"By making their boxes slightly larger"

Try suggesting *that* to a manufacturer, who work in fractions of a groat. In any case the part is or was probably used on other vehicles, which may have them in a different orientation, so the packaging suiting the original application is not unreasonable.
PaulH Solihull

Considering that the bleeder valve should mounted in the highest possible spot on the slave cylinder, it would be surprising to find an application where the the connections would be reversed, but anything is possible. Paul's theory on the price of the box is most likely correct. RAY

You should have heard the response when I told my mechanic that my hose was too short.

Yes Dan, which reminds me of the true story of my elderly aunt. Formerly from Spain but has lived many years in England, consequently, her command of spanish deteriorated, but unfortunately her command of english never improved. Anyway, she goes to the local garage with a complaint,' I think I have something wrong with my CRUTCH!' The mechaincs look blankly at each other not knowing what to say! Mike
