MG MGB Technical - convert 65B RHD to LHD
does anybody have exepriences or tips regarding the conversion of an early 65 mgb from rhd to lhd. I already have a new steering lhd rack and dashboard. the basic mechanical side looks very clear to me. In my opion the 65 body is prepared for rhd and lhd. I'am mostley interrested in more deatails regarding wiring, wipers, heather, and so one.

The wiring can be used, but you may have to extend a few individual wires to reach the other side of the dash panel. You will also need the following parts: Accelerator pedal Accelerator cable Windscreen wiper arms Steerign rack Steering column cowl Turn signal switch Dash panel Choke cable Right side mirror (if you don't have one already) You may need a new wiper motor but I'm not sure. The rest will be moving the small stuff... brake and clutch lines, electrical, etc.

I did the same with my car back in 1979 but changed from lhd to rhd. The only parts you really need are dashboard, steering rack and the wiper arms. The steering cowling is the same as are the switches. You may need a new choke cable because going from rhd to lhd means means you need longer connections opposed to switchgin from lhd to rhd.

Joern, sorry if this is a strange question but why did you change to RHD? Mike

The cowl is not the same. You can turn it upside down, or you can mount the turn signal stalk on the wrong side. But if you want to make it as the factory did, you need to replace the parts.

you will also need to change length of speedo cable ste

Mike, simple answer: I am a lefthander and need the gearshift to the left! No, thats nonsense!! The real reason is lost in time. When I did this convrsion on my car in 1979 I liked the idea to have something different in our street in munich. Now I am used to it and dontīt see a reason to revert this again.

Joern, altough it does not meet the topic, you once said that different shocks have been fitted to the rearend of your roadster. As far as i remeber they came from a VAG car. Can you give me some details upon this conversion, please, as i am assambling another roadster and do not want to use lever arm shocks or a Spax kit. Thanks Ralph

As Steve S says you will need new wiper arms, but you can alter the wiper motor to park the wipers on the opposite side by rotating the park switch on the wiper 180 degrees. This is simply done by loosening 2 nuts on the motor cover, you do not have to strip the motor. Rob

Every time I see one of these enquiries, I envision one man in one place lighting up his welding gun to begin cutting up an innocent MGB to convert it from RHD to LHD. In another location, another man has lit his welding gun to convert his LHD to RHD. You wonder if there might be an exchange service to permit people to trade these cars, and thus either save buckets of money, or spend it on useful go fast gear. *Not to say one can't do what one wants to their own car.*

No welding is involved that I'm aware of. The body shells were made to be left or right hand drive. You just unbolt one set of parts and bolt on the other.
