MG MGB Technical - Converting to a narrow transmission tunnel
I need to convert my late sixties shell to have a narrow transmission tunnel to comply with the historic race regulations. Any advice? |

Heritage do not have the tools and will only make you a narrow tunnel shell if you provide this part. The chance of finding one that is both usable and available sitting in a scrapyard is not high, but you might get a beyond saving early GT "project" car for a few hundred pounds. I would think that everything else could be fixed with tinsnips a joggling tool and a welding torch.. |

I donīt get it: you want to go historic racing but donīt have the appropriate car for it. So you want to build a "fake" with a later chassis and an early tunnel?? Why donīt you get an early and correct shell, that would be easier and more honest. Just my humble opinion Whatīs the reason for this? |

dave unfortunatly that tunnel is no good to convert the car as the main front section is missing and you cant use the four synchro tunnel as it is completely wrong if you can get a tunnel its not hard just need new floors,a small triangle infront of the floors as tunnel is thinner and a small plate to fill the corner next to the right side hole for the steering column on a uk car this is the tunnel you will need to fit in your car ste ![]() |

Thanks for the input guys. I am looking for the parts. To Joern, the issue is the cost of reshelling the car when we have a perfectly good one as it is. it would be no more "fake" than those built from new shells at a cost of Ģ20K ! |

Just build the car and enjoy racing it, the grids would be bit light 40 years on if only metal from the period was allowed on them. |

I agrre Stan but those that make the rules for the Equipe GTS series say we must have a narrow tunnel! |

graeme last time i was atmechspec dave had cut a tunnel out of a car but that was a couple of yrs ago but still worth a phone call ste |

Joern, Its about $$$. Cheaper to put in a new tunnel. James |

Hi Graeme, what I meant was not that you should race with a non-compliant car, I was realy countering the comments above to say that building a car within the rules to comply with the formula was perfectly acceptable, and if it was not then club racing, which is difficult and expenensive enough now, would stop. You could get a tunnel made using a wheeling machine as a last resort. I would guess it would take about 20 hours for a pro to make a good replica so looking out for a second hand one is worth a little effort. |
