MG MGB Technical - Correct Engine Decal Location

This was on the MGB General site but no one was able to confirm this for me.

Hello,

My car is 1973 MGB.

On the valve cover of this car there is suppose to be a silver decal/sticker with the MG logo. I have the decal. What I want to know is the correct location.

If I am standing in front of my car looking at the engine, is the decal suppose to be on the right side or left side of the valve cover? The Moss catalog shows it both ways and I have seen images of cars with it on both sides.

Thanks,

Robert

Robert. Clausager's "Original MGB" is considered the best source for such information. According to it, the decal would be on the RIGHT side (as seated in the driver's seat) or the LEFT side (when viewed standing in front of the open hood/bonnet and looking into the engine compartment).

I do not know if this really matters except on a show car. But, if I was building a show car, I would contact a show car judge familiar with the MGB and get his written opinion as to where the decal should go. Then, keep a copy of the letter in my glove box at car shows in case some other judge should disagree.

Les,

Thank you. This confirms what I found, but I just wanted to be sure.

Robert, I'm restoring a '72 bgt. Just put the sticker on the rocker cover yesterday. I placed it in the same location as the old (original) one. Photo attached.

My 74 MGB has the original BL decal on the valve covers left side. Tom’s photo matches mine.

BR. Tom's photo shows the decal on the right side of the valve cover. Orientation is, unless otherwise noted, from the perspective of the driver seated in the driver's seat. A standard convention that allows us to communicate effectively.

Robert was asking if it was on the left or right while standing in front of the car looking at the engine. I agree with you regarding a standard convention though. I gotten myself confused enough regarding driver side versus passenger side unless I’ve noted the poster’s home country.

BR. Perhaps you should read my original comment? It provides full and complete reference from either position and such is noted.

This is one of those instances where there may not be a "correct" answer as many times these decals were placed "at the whim of the installer"..."close" to where the factory desired..but not always exactly where the factory desired.
