MG MGB Technical - Cost of rebuild

Hi, I am going to rebuild a 18v engine with all new parts except rods crank and the stuff that can be reused. Head work already done. Will get new cam. All necessary machine work to be done. I would like to have an idea of cost. Thanks, Neal Turner

Neal, Quite often it is the cost of the engineering, which is the mystery, yet I would not entrust this to anyone! I am considering a Brit-teck major engine kit, as it provides virtually everything, and what is more they will consult with you as to what oversize etc. This at least gives one a rough idea of costs. For me with the Australian dollar good against the US dollar, I have to do this soon. The other concern, is the current engine, to be rebuilt, in fair repair? Ie does anything have to be corrected? Finally, do as much yourself, that keeps costs down. ( I am getting rid of all the casting marks on my crank before balancing and perhaps lightening, it is hard wirk with a hand file!. Mike

Can't be answered until you have stripped it down and figured out what is worn or cracked, etc. Also how much you want to do yourself of the reassembly. Could range from 400 to 5,000.

When I did a rebuild, I purchased a "recently" rebuilt engine. I told the owner that I was going to throw away everything inside the engine, except the crank and rods, which would be used as cores. I'm glad that I took that route, as the pistons were all burned and every one of them had broken rings. I purchased an overhaul kit from Brit-Tek. It included a cross drilled crank, County .040" overbore pistons and rings, rod and main bearings as well as a complete gasket kit. I also purchased a Kent 280 cam and new lifters and pushrods. The kit even included a complete timing gear set with chain and tensioner. It cost about $800. RAY

My experience is 2x the estimate.

Stan, My estimate was merely what the parts cost me. The machine shop labor, including installing hardened valve seats in the intake, as well as the exhaust, was additional. I also sourced the valves and springs separately, so your numbers are more accurate, in the end, then mine. RAY
