MG MGB Technical - dampers BGT

I've used Spax conversions on three cars now and have always accepted that they are a bit hard, even when wound down. They have also always had extremely noisy valving. My last set were replaced by Spax in an effort to get quieter valving.....................not that you'd notice!!!!! Then after no more than 10,000 miles one of them shed it's fluid resulting in MOT failure. Since I was under time pressure I bought Gaz replacements. Well what a revalation, they are far more compliant, actually quite soft at the lowest setting, so wonder of wonders I've had to wind them up 4 notches AND they are noiseless!!!!!

Allan, Regular or parabolic springs on the rear?

John Hoyle uses Gaz on his suspension kits. They are excellent. With 36 click positions they can be really soft or really firm. I like them a lot and have them front and back. Mine are now four years and 14,000 miles in use and show no signs of deterioration yet.

After the second set of Spax failed I went back to lever arms, I wasn't going to throw even more money at it.

I've done the same. The Spax were far too hard and noisy as well so I replaced mine with updated lever arms. No further problems

Michael,
Regular springs!
My only problem with lever arms is the amount of time it takes to get two which match in terms of performance. I've spent time on the fronts playing with the valve settings, on an home made jig. But without data to go by it's all guess work and trial and error. Anyone using levers I would recommend using motor cycle fork oil, it's more heat stable.

I have the non-adjustable Koni classics on the rear with modified parabolic springs (added extra half leaf from the centre point forwards). The ride is still not quite right. Does anybody know whether with GAZ (for instance) the softest setting is softer than the KONIs? At present the Konis are set a quarter of a turn from the softest setting, but it would be useful the to have something that is adjustable from way too soft to way too hard.
