MG MGB Technical - dismantle a 67 speedometer

I am trying to remove the mechanical internals from the housing on a 67 speedometer.

I can't seem to maneuver it out of the case because the trip odometer reset pin sticking out of the bottom hangs it up.

What is the trick?

Hi Steven,

This link is all about speedo repair.

I suppose there must have been *something* holding the reset twiddler in but I was blowed if I could find it on my 73. I managed to wiggle mine out OK, but the needle popped off when putting it back, but jacking up a rear wheel and running the engine in 4th at the revs required for 30mph soon sorted that.

I cheated and sent mine away to a one man band in Keigthty after it failed on the way to Berlin.
Its back and on the car and working fine . It had already been rebuilt by Speedy in the 90s so compared to the factory build it didnt last long last time
Luckily the odometer, total and trip both carried on working and we had the sat nav for speed so it didnt spoil the rally. I once had a right angle drive fail just as we were flagged away in Holland that made it hard work.

I believe there's a split pin that holds the odometer extension to the odometer reset shaft. It has to be gently pressed out to remove the extension. With this out of the way, everything comes apart easily. RAY

Herb: Thanks for the instructions contained in the link. I pushed (actually forced) the reset shaft into the case and was able remove the assembly. The shaft got tweaked a little bit but was able to straighten it.

Then painted the inside of the can gloss white and tried to put the assembly back in with no luck.

The only way to re-install this is to remove the pointer and face. Then replace the face and pointer while following Paul's method of calibrating.

That reminds me, I *did* remove the face-plate, and I think it was easing it back over the pointer when the pointer flipped off.
