MG MGB Technical - Do I need a new camshaft????

I have a clatter and adjusted my valves (Rule of nine method). I understand that the MG has more noise than average, but I tried to isolate where this particular noise was coming from. With the engine running, I took a .10 feeler guage and stuck it between each valve and rocker. The noise stopped when I stuck the .10 guage on valve #7, and it was repeatable. Does this tell me that the clatter is coming from the lifter banging on a worn camshaft? Is there anything more that I can do to identify the problem? Any help is appreciated.

A worn cam does not usually cause tappet rattle in itself as the wear starts near the tip of the cam and not usually in the area of valve opening, however when the cam is worn it usually means the lifters are shot as well and that can make the clearance vary as the lifters turn to a more or less worn spot. Try checking that valve again and if you still have the noise remove the manifold, side plates, push rods etc and inspect the bottom of the lifters because if the cam is worn they will be also, in fact they usually show wear first.

J,

In addition to what Denis said, check your rocker and rocker shaft. You might want to check them first since it is less trouble than getting the cam followers out.

I haven't experienced it myself, but I think the rocker can wear where it meets the valve so that you get a false setting with a flat blade feeler gauge because you are checking it at the non-worn surface. Also, rocker shaft and rocker bushing wear is very common.

Maybe it is not in the valves? Piston, rings, rocker shaft, pedistal, wrist pin, all sometimes sound like they are valve noises. Has the engine been into lately?
