MG MGB Technical - DVLA Registration change - how long?

I bought a 2nd hand MGB as a project. I sent off the UK Registration document for the change of owner details which was quite prompt returning it to me in about 2 weeks.

I have since changed the engine capacity and the colour, so I sent the docuemnt back for these details to be changed but haven't had the documents returned yet after 5 weeks. I used the Vehicle Inquirey function on the DVLA site and it still shows it's old colour so I can presume that document hasn't been lost in the return post.

Does anu one have any experince of how long it takes DVLA to change these details. It's frustrating because I can't tax, insure or drive it and the British summer is short! I tried contact DVLA but teh lines are busy and there's no caller queuing system.

Thanks James

Always send important documents like this by Recorded Delivery. May not stop them getting lost, but someone else will have to pay the cost of replacing them plus possibly compensation.

Paul, thanks.

Your help makes me feel better.. but the question is what now (?), rather than what I should have done 5 weeks ago.

Sorry not to be more helpful, but, just keep trying to call them. I'm assuming they are now seriously short-staffed as I've been trying to call them off and on for the past three months with not much success, but, they are really helpful when you do manage ...!

Five weeks isn't seriously over-long for them having said that, so you might be ok :)

To be another "what you should have done"! I'd have taxed and insured it while you had the papers before sending them back :P!!!!!!

Sorry not to be of more help ....., however, with the past couple of days weather - you've not missed much :)

You will just have to contact them one way or the other to find out if they have received it or not. Five weeks sounds a long time to me, although I've only done a change of owner recently and not other details, so I suspect it didn't arrive where it should have done. Another "what you should have done five weeks ago" is take a photocopy. That may have been enough to tax it.

However you shouldn't need the registration document to insure it, and once it is insured and registered in your name you should be able to tax it online.

Out of interest at what size increase do you have to notify the DVLA, is it 1.9 and above?

They record the actual i.e. 1798. You wouldn't notify a maintenance rebore, but probably are supposed to if it's a performance modification. Definitely should inform the insurance company.

Having tried several times over a 3 day period I did in the end get through into the menu, then to talk to a real person. A very helpful lady told me that they had received the document and it was queued for processing which for engine size and colour changes typically takes 4 to 6 weeks. Possibly the reasonably fast turn around for the ownership cxhange is not mirrored in details changes, as the ownership change had been returned to me in a couple of weeks.

We live and learn! thanks for the inputs, James
