MG MGB Technical - Engine Mount Shims??????

Hey Everyone-
So I decided to takle changing the dreaded engine mount on the late model B's (US Drivers Side) wich went well. I was going through the threads and dont understand why everyone just doesnt pull the rack and pinion. Just a little heat on the universal joint and walla. But anyway that all went great. The thing is this:

Im sure you know what it looks like when the backing plate that connects to the engine separate. There is just the metal plate attached and the rubber is still attached to the frame mount.

I have 3! of those backing plates on the engine mount (Drivers Side US).

Is this a shim to get the engine aligned right?
A quick fix from the PO instead of changing the mount?
How can I measure to see if it is wrong ?

The engine mount bracket is off so any mesurements can be done easily etc etc...
James

Well I found two threads in the archives...

The shims are for exhaust clearance issues from the factory.

But still wondering if anyone else has more info:
As I am missing a bolt from the engine mount so who really knows what has been done to the car in the past.

Also I am going with common sense that I should remove the last shim as that is really the backing of the broken engine mount.
James

You are correct, they are just shims
Tony Bates

Put the 2 shims back in where they were when replacing the motor mount. The shims were put in at the factory, and it is quite likely the original motor mount that has finally gone.

Is that Paul Kile? Where have you been all these years?

They are shims to allow for variations in manufacture. When the engine is down on the mounts you should have to tap the LH one down into place about 3/16" so the mount is under compression. This will stop it tearing off the rubber from the plate.

Sorry Paul but no. Paul Kile lives/lived in Citrus Heights, a suburb of Sacramento. I am in San Diego County. I thought he might have gone to the V8 board once his GT was restored. I also heard from a friend of mine up in that area that he had also purchased an 1100, so might be there.

I did a whole bunch of measurements on my car recently because I was installing a 68 engine in my 79 with new heavy duty mounts and I just couldn't get everything to sit right. I ended up with a thick shim under the LH mount, a thin shim under the RH mount and a shim under the LH block mount bracket to twist it slightly.

When I measured the mounts on the rails I found the RH one was welded level with and parallel to the the top of the rail. The LH mount was welded down 2mm at the back and 4mm at the front - it was low and crooked!

The shims seem to be to compensate for assembly inaccuracies like that.

Those measurement also explain why this car has broken at least three LH mounts in its life!

I have Paul K's old Yellow 67 GT.
