MG MGB Technical - Engine Mounts

What is required to install a late B engine in an early B with regard to the engine mounts and the front plate? Can the early mounts and front plate be installed on the late engine without requiring modifications so that the late engine mounts properly in the early car?

Barc,

Very early mk1s were setup with a front plate that carried on the engine mounting blocs. It sounds like a prerequisite to your conversion, the location has moved rearwards during '74.

Barc,
It is just a matter of changing the front plate - no modifications are involved.
(I have a late engine in my Magnette. The Magnette mounts are similar to the early B.)

Thanks, Renou and David. We will do the plate and mounts change. Barc

Not exactly an answer to your question Barc, but if you fit an earlier engine in a later car, you have to cut away some of the casting to get the left side mount to fit.

Here's a picture of a 18GG block and 18V mount and front plate. You can see where I hacksawed through the casting.

I know the paint isn't exactly concours, but this was an old engine I picked up to use while rebuilding mine.

Hi David,

What a nice blue painted engine! Concour condition.

David, that is interesting because I would have thought the block castings would all have been the same. Something to remember! Thanks, Barc
And Renou it is sometimes called 'patina' b.

Renou,

Vous ici!

I can deliver the engine to you immediately if the colour is what you are looking for.

It runs perfectly, but consumes large amounts of oil as soon as you get up to motorway speeds.

I picked it up for £50 from eBay, popped it in the car earlier this year and have just removed it to put my newly built, shiny black engine.

I'm really looking forward to the new engine.

+60, with a Piper 285 and a head ported by me.

A bientot

A bientôt.

Renou,

I'll be in Nantes with Betty Boop (my B) at Christmas as well.

Let's meet there.
