MG MGB Technical - Exhaust ring fit up?

Hello to all. I am starting to fit up the new exhaust and I see that the dounuts between the manafold and header are smooth on one side and "rough" on the other. Does it make any difference which way they are installed? Thanks, TOm

Tom. The ones for the engine I am installing, FelPro brand, are symmetrical and neither are marked for any particular orientation. I have never seen the style which you refer to. To the best of my knowledge, the gaskets go on with either side up towards the exhaust manifold.

I see, it may just be the "Moss" brand I got. Les, is there any clearance between the header pipe and the cross member under the car? My new header fits tight up to it and I amafraid it is bent wrong. Thanks, Tom

Tom. It is quite common that the parts are not an exact, precision fit and will require a bit of bending. I get the system hooked together, wire, etc, for extra support, and drive it to a local muffler shop which will do any bending necessary to make the system fit properly.

My last header pipes were the opposite of the problem you describe--they hung down too far and needed to be bent upwards for the system to fit properly. The exhaust system pipes should clear the crossmember by 1/2"-1" and l leave out the center muffler hand have a straight pipe made up to connect the header pipe to the rear muffler. The middle muffler is a "dent magnet" on the chrome bumper cars.

Tom, the non-symmetrical dounuts are not unusual, they very by brand.

Les-
What is the Fel Pro part # for your gaskets. They've got to be better than the Moss Motors Chinese-made items.
Steve S.

Steve. The part number listed on the upper gasket set parts list is 23548. This is a pre-75 upper gasket kit. Do not know if I have the 75-80 upper gasket kit in inventory right now. If someone needs the number, let me know and I will check.

Good to hear from you.
