MG MGB Technical - fan switch

on my 79 b i am replacing the fan switch on the radiator. i ordered the clip too. the clip is for a 80 b and i wasnt going to use it as the gromet for the switch is too thick to pass through the clip . When i put the switch in through the new gromit it doesnt feel real tight is that normal? should i try using the clip for the 80 b? the old switch had a wire tie that went through the radiator and around the switch and i guess it was there to prevent the switch from coming out. I dont feel safe leaving it in without some kind of clip or something to hold it in but the wire tie looks like a goldberg set up. In 2 shop books i cant find and pics or how to install it properly . thanks ,Doug

Use the clip. It will tighten the grip on the switch when its all installed in the radiator

thanks jim. I am not sure how the clip goes on. I tried it behind the gromet with the clips facing the engine and slipped the switch through the gromet but cant see how this would hold the switch in tight to the radiator. besides that clip was resting on the radiator first ahead of the gromet and not sure if it would seal like that.IT didnt feel tight. thanks Doug

PS ,IF SOMEONE HAS A PIC OF THE CLIP INSTALLED ON THE FAN SWITCH I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT. THANKS DOUG

Doug, I think that the clip is only for the 1980 style radiator.

Doug, et al: I had the fan switch fail in my 79. Turns out any replacement radiator for 1977-1980 from Moss has been replaced by the 1980 configuration. This means you need to be sure if the radiator has been replaced by the current 1980 style to get the correct switch.

Now the clip installation: If I recall, you place the clip on the radiator first, then the grommet and then the switch. The "prongs" of the clip should hold the switch in place.

Cheers

Here are pictures of my rad switches.

Pic 1: Car is a '79 (built 1978). Original switch, replacement radiator supplied by Moss in 1997 (note the small hardwood block tied to rad pipe to stop switch popping out).

Pic 2: Car is an '81 (built 1980). Original switch and rad.
