MG MGB Technical - fitting rear spring front polybush

I'm about to refit the rear suspension/axle and have a set of SuperPro bushes to install. I note that the front of the spring has a steel cylinder installed in it (I've removed the original rubber bush. Does this cylinder need to be removed (I expect not). It's just that there looks to be quite a difference between the inner diameter of the cylinder and the outer diameter of the SuperPro bush, something like 5mm. Has anyone any advice on fitting this? I know I probably need to heat the bush in hot water first but this difference in measurements is a bit perplexing.

Not familiar with that brand and advise that you contact them for instructions. I used Energy Suspension on my MGB. The steel cylinders absolutely must be retained. The springs swivel and the cylinder is what the bolt and nut make up to after being torqued providing a secure and snug fit with the required slack for the spring eye to travel. The cylinders will probably be rust corroded and pitted. I think I recall ordering new metal cylinders.

Rick,
I thought that the inner sleeve (or crush tube) is what the bolt torques up to. It was on the front suspension.

Steve, I think you'll find that the cylinder is part of the original bush.

Misinterpreted the terms you used. The sleeve that the bolt passes through is absolutely necessary. It's been a couple of years since I did mine, but think the sleeves came with the set. The "cylinder" wasn't required on my set.

Yes it has to be knocked out of there. I've just done it on my A. "PITA"Bob

I had to cut the sleeve out. It was a bit of a pain but nowhere near as frustrating as putting the polybush in. I ended up being quite brutal with it, squashing everything up in the vice. They're done now.

I replaced everything front and rear on my MGB with the Energy Suspension brand. The inner sleeve for the rear leaf eye was included in the new set. The outer cylinder wasn't needed and discarded along with the old bushings. The old bushing comes out complete by spreading the eye slightly with a standard, flat screwdriver. The eye bushings came in two halves. Poly bushes should be installed (with proper grease) and left for final tightening when the car is back on the ground and at rest.
