MG MGB Technical - Front license placement

Went to an MG car show a few weeks back. Now trying to figure out what placement is correct for the front license.

Saw one with it bolted to the bottom of the plate holder so the license was 3/4 above the bumper. One with it mounted so the plate is in the middle, and mine with it mounted so none is above the bumper.

The license on my MGB GT was fastened so that it hung below the bumper. This car was an original that I purchased from the second owner. I have just rebuilt the car and as I wanted the Special Tuning Air Dam, I installed the plate so that it would allow a little better air flow.

For what its worth, Bruce, on my '75 BGT the number plate hangs below the (rubber) bumper and it attached on the inside of the bumper.

I assume we're talking about rubber bumpered cars here?

I know the bumpers were drilled with the two mounting holes on the front bumper. I've seen some cars which came with a licence plate mount which mounts on these two holes. This causes the licence plate to sit just a little higher then the top of the bumper by about 3/4". If you mount your plate directly to the bumper, it will sit at the same level as the top of the bumper, and will hang below the bottom edge of the bumper. I think it's safe to assume that the bracket was the way the cars came from most dealerships.. but, with that said, it's going to be a north american feature... so you would have to find out where this bracket would have been added, ie. the factory for NA bound vehicles, or at the dealer as they sold them.

I just took mine off altogether.. I don't like the look of a front licence plate.

Agreed Dave, but the cops tend to like the look here in NY.

I too took mine off for the same reason.
So far (15 years) the BC RCMP have given me 5 tickets for no front license plate.
Next time you are on the road, notice how close the car has to be to read the front or rear license plate.

"notice how close the car has to be to read the front or rear license plate"?

In the UK you have to be able to read them at 20 metres or more or you aren't allowed to drive at all!
