MG MGB Technical - Front wheel hub bolt size?

i have wires on my car and there's a split pin in the castle nut that i cant get out.
im thinking of hitting a socket over the bolt and snaping the split pin.
but i don't know what size the bolt is?
i don't want to go hitting the wrong size socket over the bolt.

s truman,

Long needle nose pliers or a screwdriver will let you straighten the legs of the pin. Then you can start prying it out from the leg end, then pull it from the round end. Then use the hole in the splined area to fish it out.

If you want to break it off, pushing the socket on won't break it. It is turning the nut with the wrench that will break the pin. Sorry, I don't know the size. Just pick the one that fits.

that's what i meant by braking it but i don't want to go knocking on the wrong size socket and damaging the nut.
tried all shapes to get the pin out.
its 4 or so inches inside the hub so a bit award

The hub nut is 1 & 7/8 AF and it's usually reasonably easy to undo. Sheering the pin with the socket rotating the nut is considered a viable option.

thanks what would that be in mill size?
s truman

Not exactly. It's in inches, which is fortunately still accepted currency in Halfords.

Sorry. Big mistake. The socket size is 1&1/8 inches. I thought it didn't sound quite right.

It needs to be a deep socket - I got one off ebay for a couple of quid.

managed to get it off today with a 30 mill socket only then did i notice the hole in the hub to be able to pull the split pin out.
dou!

It's still a fiddle to get the split-pin out of that hole, which is why snapping it off with the socket can be an easier option. Don't know about a deep socket being needed, I have a standard socket and not had any problems. Using Metric sockets and spanners isn't a good idea, some are worse fits than others and could damage the nut.
