MG MGB Technical - Front, Rear Axle

Need to remove the front and rear axle on my MGB.where do i support the tub at? The motor is out of the car.Trans. is out,and its just the shell(tub)body. Thanks for your help,Rich

Rich,

Put a set of jackstands just in front of the spring mounts in the back, and another set under the pieces that act like frame rails in front. If you look under the sills, you'll see some body structure that stands proud of the rest. That's the piece I'm talking about.

When I did mine I put some substantial wood blocks between the axle stands and the floor pan, just in front of the spring hangers where you got the benefit of the heelboard. I use the intergral chassis rail at the front as well. Be careful under there you cant chock a wheel to stop the car moving, I have a couple of 2' lenghts of old sleeper that I shove under the car as a back stop sometimes

Stan, thanks much for the help......However "sleeper" not sure about the meaning,Rich
Rich Osterhout

Rich. We call them "railroad ties" here in the US. In the UK, they call them "sleepers". In other words, Stan recommends a couple of lengths of large wood.

Les,thanks much for the word lesson.I take it that the ties are there to defray the car from falling on you??OR rolling while you take the other axle off?Is this a correct assumption? Good to here from you once again,Rich
Rich Osterhout

Just to give you some wriggle room if the worst happens. I pulled a Mk I Ford Consul off a bottle jack when I was a kid and you sort of remember things like that. Being a kid I was quick enough to get out so am here today. A car up on 4 axle stands does represent more of a risk than on 2 stands plus chocked wheels.
Stan Best

On the rare times I have had the car up on four stands I think I put the wheels under the body so if it dropped it would fall onto them and not me!

Thanks to all for your advice,I will heed it!!!I will be putting the car on a rotator(car tilter)after the axles are off. Thanks,Rich
