MG MGB Technical - Gear box alignment issues

Hello,

I have just fitted my engine and gearbox (together) into my 1971 roadster. However, despite getting the mounting points for the engine aligned correctly and the fixing bolts located loosely, the gearbox cross member doesn't line up with the fixing points. Also when assembling the cross member assy, I found the fixing points incredibly difficult to access, is there an easy way to do this?

Many thanks,
Alex Davies

Not sure why your mountings don't line up, but here is a link to Martin Williamson's method for altering the gearbox cross member.

Alex,

Did you have the crossmember off of the car? I think there are extra holes in the frame rails, which means that it is possible to install it in the wrong position. I'm not sure I remember this corretly, but have a look.

The cross member has been removed from the car, it did notice there appears to be 2 location holes in the cross member for the mount to go through (I used the location which is nearer the front of the vehicle - unsure if this is correct).

Also there appear to be 4 fixing holes for the cross member (along the chassis rail) and the cross member only requires 2. the cross member seems to almost line up with the furthest back (car rearward) holes - is this correct?

Many thanks,
Alex Davies

Have you fitted the crossmember to the gearbox the wrong way round?? There are four holes in the crossmember and all four are bolted to the chassis rails.

John Twist has an excellent youtube video on how to attach the cross member correctly:

It's very easy to do it wrong, as there are so many combinations of mounting points etc. Hopefully this is simply the case and your shell isn't damaged somehow!
