MG MGB Technical - Grease Gun

I'd like to think I'm reasonably intelligent! However having bought this grease gun, I cant work out how to load & use it. Can any one give me some tips?
The back unscrews & there is a spring loaded mechanism which pushes forward. The tip Moves in & out in order to push the grease past the nipple, but I cant get grease up to the tip.
No there weren't any instructions with it.

Well, until someone comes along who knows what they're talking about I'll post to encourage others.

I'm not sure about your gun and description but the usual way is to put the open end of the gun on to the centre hole of the plastic insert in the pot of grease and pull up plunger handle as you push gun down into the pot, this sucks the grease into the gun.

If you don't have a plunger handle then I'd guess it just the push down in pot but it depends where the spring is.

Don't you just screw the end off, fill it up and then it's pump action like a centre punch?

....

i recently bought a hilka.

first use. got the grease in. cool.

but it would not come off the nipple.

so i had to unscrew nipple.

put it in vice. pushed, pulled, twisted, yanked...darn thing is still stuck in there and just won't come out.

ho hum. must contact seller. used a few hilka tools and they have always been ok. similar to silverline in quality.

You say you can't work out to load it, even though the back unscrews. What's inside? Once filled your type _should_ just need to be pushed hard against the nipple, once clipped on, to pump grease. But I would strongly recommend the type with the handle as in the attached, much easier to use.

With those you pull the loop at the back out and lock it in position to compress the internal spring, then unscrew the end cap containing that loop, then press the open end of the gun proper down onto the disc in the grease pot to fill as here http://www.reluctantmechanic.com/using-tools/grease_gun.php. Or scraped in with a spatula if the pot doesn't have the disc with the hole in.

If you get the type that paulh4 favours as indeed I would also recommend this type, then get a grease gun cartridge from a motor factor. Pull the looped end over to the centre and pull the rod out as far as it will go and a groove in the rod should be seen. Move the rod over to the side to lock it into the groove slot. Now unscrew and remove the pump end or lever end whichever you want to call it. Take the plastic caps from the cartridge and slide it into the grease gun,(obviously the larger of the two holes goes into the gun, now screw the pump end back on, pull back very slightly on the rod and move it to the centre again and push the rod in fully.
On the pump end there is usually a small bleed point. undo this a little and the pump the gun or if you are lucky then it will just "flow" some grease. Tighten this again after the grease is coming through and it's done.
I have personally used grease cartridges to grease thousands of grease points on heavy earth moving equipment for over 40yrs and they really are the way to go to make it easy to reload your grease gun, and you don't get debris in the grease from the gun whilst reloading it either.

It will take you longer to read this explanation of how to load the grease gun than to do it in practice.

I'll take some photos, there is a spring loaded mechanism inside, which compressed up to the nipple end....easy i thought just fill the void with grease & off we go. Nope, nothing at all, I assume you prime it somehow but unsure how. Probably easier to go to machine mart & get a pump action one as Paul says. This was from Moss, & TBH I didn't want to ring them & ask how it works, of course assuming that they would know anyway.

I bought a Wanner grease gun off eBay, following recommendations on the Midget BBS.

Swiss made and works well.

I bought a Clarke CGG 120-4 grease gun which came out as top gun( sorry for the pun) in Practical Classic's survey. I only use it once a year but it works well. About £18.

I had a similar gun with my T type. It was filled with oil and used to top up the steering rack so I'm assuming what you have is an oil gun and not a grease gun

I have an old push style grease gun similar to yours
I pull mine apart ,fill it with grease leaving enough room for the piston, using a screwdriver handle in there to get the air bubbles out of the grease as much as possible while filling, then refit the piston and spring and screw the cap on--Then up against a piece of wood ,and pump bugg&ry out of it till it starts pumping grease---it's ok then till it needs another refill
