MG MGB Technical - GT Door re-alignment

Can anyone out there in the BIG MG world give me helpful advice on the re-alignment of the doors on my 70 BGT. I can see, with the door cards and protective membrane removed, the 3 top and 3 bottom bolts that will presumably need to be loosened to facilitate the re-aligning process. Are they just loosened or do they need to be totally removed and re-inserted? How do you get an even spacing all around the door? Is it easier to do this with the door in the open or (plenty of room inside as seats, carpets are removed at present)closed position and finally, is it a one man or two man operation? Thanks in advance. Peter

Peter.

There is one more nut you need to address. It is in behind the fender. You need to remove the splash panels to get to it.

Just loosen the screws and the back bolt slightly. Just enough so you can move the door with a bit of force.
Then the fun begins. If you then close the door just to nearly catching you can use shims to get the spacing correct.

But, then you have to slightly open the door to tighten the screws.

Remember that the head of the screws is not a true phillips head.

Another trick I use is a pair of 4" suction cups with handles. They make it a lot easier to move the door around.

And I heard, I do not know whether it is true that in the factory days a further adjustment method was grip the door, and pull down or up accordingly? I suppose something must have been the 'master' panel, and all else was 'plumbed' to this panel? Mike

You need to read Paul Hunt's excellent article on door hanging.

The 'further' method I was aware of was a bar that gripped the top and bottom of the door near the rear edge, so the whole door could be twisted to get the rear edge flush with the rear wing, once the front edge had been set right using the hinges. Up and down is just done sliding the hinges on the A-post to get the front edge at the right height, and the carcass on the hinges to get the rear edge right.

I used that method Paul describes when I restored my car. A big length of Dexion angle I bolted to the door then used to twist the door shell so it all lined up.
