MG MGB Technical - GT rear hatch seal!!

I read a thread once that said that replacing this seal was the hardest part of a GT restoration!...so damned right they were! I removed the aluminium holding piece, and you would think that all you do is place the new rubber in, and screw down the alloy strip...no b...dy way can I get it down again evenly. The thickness of the rubber tends to make the alloy slope back towards the glass. BTW, the new rubber is the same thickness of the old one, so I cannot understand the problem. The alloy strip has two strips along its length..I assume that the deepest one is the one that is meant to slot into the rubber?

Anyone with photos showing installation???...would be great for a full description...I've read all the threads, but no-one describes the actual answers!

Curiously Gary I didn't find this part of the work particularly difficult. It all went together well and has since been proved in heavy rain. Here is a picture I took before I removed the old rubbers. Which rubber are you having trouble with, the one that goes all round the gate or the shorter one that goes across the top and halfway down the sides? It's only the short one that goes under the aluminium strip. The long one goes into the pressed channel on the tailgate.

No, Mike he is having problems with the window trim rubber, under the trim strips.

Now I'm confused. He states that the alloy strip needs to be screwed down. The only thing that is fixed with screws on the hatch is the part I showed in my picture.
Mike Howlett

I thought I was pretty clear about the problem. Yes, it is the alloy strip (that I believe was originally pop rivetted down) that I am having problems with, and also what part or ridge on the underneath that actually holds the rubber in place. Should I glue the rubber down first maybe ...I realise that the two "wing" parts of the seal that go part way down the hatch were glued, but not the top.
Gary Lock

I'm afraid I can't recall what the underside of the alloy strip is like. I didn't glue the top, only the sides. The strip holds the top. On my car the strip was held with self-tapping screws, and I have reason to believe it was made like that. There were no pop rivets.
Mike Howlett

Strip was screwed down on my 67 GT. I put the rubber on with the hatch off, and did have a little issue getting it started, but once I got a couple screws in, it went on fairly easy.

Sorry guys, I did not realize there was a picture. I had no real problem with mine. It screwed back inot place. The two parts that run halfway down the hatch I tucked under the inner seal and closed the hatch, a couple weeks in the summer sun and it sealed itself, no glue.'70Gt
