MG MGB Technical - hand brake lever

My hand brake lever seems to have fallen apart. There appear to be some worn down locating pins. Are the back plate and (half round) shaft supposed to be joined together? If so, how are they joined?

Andy, not sure if this addresses your question but the handle shaft has an approximate 5/8 in boss (at the bottom end) that slides into the ratchet plate bushing. It's fairly easy to disassemble the whole works and clean everything up.

Can you post a picture? From memory the brake lever is one piece and the base is a separate piece. I have a picture here but I don't think it shows what you mean: http://asciimation.co.nz/pics/flyaway/index.html

The two bits are pretty solid from memory. Hard to imagine them coming apart.

My problem area is the flat plate at the base of the handbrake lever, the area that the ratchet plate rotates against. The the pivot for the pawl is on the flat plate. It is 1" x 3 1/4".
What I want to find out is how this flat plate is secured to the half round handbrake arm?
I'm work on getting a picture; unfortunately I only have a cheap digital camera.
Simon, looking at your pictures, it is the plate behind the ratchet plate and pawl.
I haven't taken the assembly apart yet because I want to make sure that I have a record of the angle between the arm and operating lever.
It looks like the plate has pins in it to prevent it rotating on the handbrake lever?

Andy, I understand now what you're asking. That small rectangular plate is actually spot-welded to the handle shaft. Mine seems to have 8 small welds -- one at each corner and two on each side in the middle.

Here is a picture of the problem area - the shiny dimple below the pawl and the shiny wear area below it. So it is apparently spot welded, and the welds have failed.
