MG MGB Technical - Horn problem

as i reach the final stages to finish my 66 roadster I am having problems with the horn. Below is a picture of the steering column . The horn honks before I put on the button when the wire in the column hits the inside of the shaft. In addition the horn button does not slide on to the column. It is too small diameter. Should it slide on the column? I must be missing something. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Dave

I don't know much about horn buttons, but it looks as if the E clip could short against the inside of the horn button, causing your tooting problem.

Dave, I believe that there's supposed to be an insulator washer of sorts behind the "E" clip to keep from contacting a ground. As Herb said, looks like it's hitting the shaft. PJ

According to my '65 dealer's parts book, you seem to be missing an insulator inside the column. The part number for the assembly is: 7H-6903. Hope this helps. RAY '67 B

Check out Paul Hunts site http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/ and look at the horns section - you'll see photos that will explain all
