MG MGB Technical - Ignition key

i just bought a 1973 mgb 600$ because the seller did not have the keys i used a remote starter switch car runs great where can i get a ignition key that will start the car not a key blank

You need the key number - it will be on the Heritage Certificate.

I think it would be cheaper to buy a second hand lock with key.

To take the old lock out you'll need to cut it out, because it's held in by shear bolts. On mine, luckily, the heads hadn't been sheared. Because I wanted to use mine in competition (mustn't have a steering lock) I decided to use a separate ignition/starter switch as per early MGB (mine was from a BMC Mini), located in one of the blanked holes in the console.

Another issue, by implication, is that you haven't keys for the door locks. As standard, these are held in by clips, accessible when you remove the door panels. They have a propensity to loosen off and partially revolve. On mine, I bought a pair from the UK MGOC that were held in by nuts, which is a much better arrangement. Maybe Moss may do these as well?

You do not need to cut it out - the shear bolts are quite a coarse thread and they can be removed easily by dropping the top of the column and tapping the edge of the remaining head with a drift - small chisel, screwdriver or centre punch.

On a 73 - RHD at any rate, there is no need to drop the column. The bolts go down from above so you can just drill up from the threaded side, the hole in the yoke acts as a guide. May not be the same in LHD as the columns and locks did vary.

Are you sure the key cylinder is the original to your car?? If not, you may just order a new keyed cylinder through Moss Motors and be done with it.

Dropping the column involves that one bolt you can see at the top of the pic - not that difficult!
