MG MGB Technical - Indicator Stalk

Does the proturbance on the stalk assembly engage into the cutout in the steering column, & if so how do i get the spacing right for the horn ring and steering boss. The photo shows the indent, but the column will need to come out about 3/4-1" in order for the boss to fit.

That cam should pass under the fingers on the indicator switch lifting them out of the way as the wheel is turned from the straight-ahead, then when it is returned the side of the cam should hit the end of the finger to cancel the switch, see the seventh picture onwards here http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/turnswitch.htm

The switch should engage in the cut-out.

Your cam looks way too close to the column outer, and to the back of the wheel for that matter.

The column inner position is fixed by the column UJ and the rack. You should always give the year of the car as there were many variations in most things, but I'm assuming it is a 70 to 76. On those (and Mk1s) the column outer is held in place by two U clamps - one up by the dash (A in the attached) and the other under the heater shelf (B). These will have to be slackened and the outer slid down until the switch is in the right place. There should be a concertina tube between the end of the column outer and the toe-board (C) to seal the hole in the toe-board over a range of outer positions.

The cam is also adjustable by sliding up and down, so really the thing that gives you the correct position of the outer is the relationship between the top of the column cowling and the back of the wheel - i.e. you need a clearance so the wheel doesn't rub but not a huge gap. The right half of the attached shows my 73 for example. With the outer set the cam can be moved to engage with the switch.

Further to my previous post, I have adjusted the column but was still having problems with the horn ring. looking at Moss, it looks like my stalk has an earlier contact (mine is 74) can anyone confirm this please.

Doesn't look right to me, there should be a brass pad which runs on the track of the horn ring,

The tip has broken off, see this picture from Leacy http://www.leacyclassics.com/37h8051.html

Seems to be NLA from the usual suspects, you could try for a used from Andy Jennings or Welsh MG.
