MG MGB Technical - Is this the right way up?

Fitting the Anti-Roll-Bar (sway bar for our US readers) on my '71 roadster project yesterday, then looking at it this morning, I'm thinking "It could go the other way up". Have I got it right?

Mike Howlett

I don’t know. Mine is flat.

Flat eh! Mine is apparently an uprated 3/4 inch bar.
Mike Howlett

My standard CB bar looks almost flat but could have a slight kink at the ends. The standard bar I put on the RB is definitely kinked, and the RH uprated bar I took off very definitely kinked.

IMHO the ends should be angled downwards (as yours seems to be) to clear the steering arms when the suspension is fully extended, hence the thicker the bar the more the kink.

Thanks Paul. Looking at it again I'm sure you are right and I have it the correct way up. Of course if there is a banging once the car is on the road (probably next year) I'll know what it is...

The original on my (CB) car looks flat and this uprated one, which I bought from Midland Sports & Classics, but never fitted, is also flat.

Mike
It'll be fine, you have it up the right way
With v8s and rubber bumper cars the steering rack sits about a fat inch further forward and a little higher on the crossmember than a CB 4cyl car, and the std bar for them has the bend as you have it to get clearance for the rack end when on full lock/full droop
You can swap bars without an issue
I've got a straight 7/8"bar on a mate's RB car and it still clears, just, and with the bent bar on a chrome car as you have there is heaps of extra clearance
Either bar will work on either car

I knew Willy would know the definitive answer! Thanks. I have an RV8 bar on my V8 GT conversion and that has a big dip in the middle to clear the front pulley. I haven't worked on a "normal" MGB for years.

Funny you should say that Mike - I've just driven about 3000k in the Winnie (motorhome) from Queensland in the north to Victoria in the south, ostensibly to meet/greet a new grandson. I had a grand plan to flip down to Tasmania, purely to meet and greet Mr Willy Revitt - so good are his responses and his willingness to share his (in my opinion) world class knowledge and experience. Guess what - bloody Covid restrictions got in the way, and we had to flee back to Qld before we were locked out of our own home! So 6000k+ and still I haven't been able to say g'day in person, Willy. Next time.
John.
