MG MGB Technical - Kingpin bush wear

Generally speaking, how much wear between kingpin and stub axle bushes is regarded as acceptable, and at what point is it advisable to change the bushes?

If you can rock the stub axle and see movement between the king pin and the bushing, they are due for replacement.
John H

I agree with John. Any free play in the king pin is unacceptable and would fail the annual test here in the UK.
Mike Howlett

Yes... I was afraid you would say that. :-)

Tore,

I bet the britts to be right about your question!
When I got my new ones from MGOC, I was really astonished: no end play. And surprisingly analyzing the old ones, I noticed the bush doesn't wear that much, it's the king pin itself that wears out. MGOC sells them not that expensive.
Regards.

I took the easier way out and replaced the swivel-axle assembly complete, having read of all sort of hoops one has to jump through regarding reaming and shimming. By comparison reshimming the wheel-bearings is much simpler. I can only remember having to do one, fiarly soon after purchase of the roadster, and I've done 50k in the roadster and 75k in the V8, so they are pretty robust.
