MG MGB Technical - K&N not fitting on HIF carb

I converted to a pair of HIF4 carbs on my 79B. As per many of the suggestions on this board, I purchased a pair of K&N conical filters.

However, the filters will not mount properly to the carb bodies. The bolt head in the center of the filter body requires clearance where the dashpot is. In other words, the mating surface of the carb is almost flush with the dashpot, providing no room for the filter bolt. It looks like a spacer would be needed in order to get the required clearance.

I have attached a photo.

I feel like an idiot asking this question since so many people have apparently already done this, but I must be missing something.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Chet Harter

I have conical K&N filters on my MGB with HIF carbs, and they fit fine. They don't have that bolt that's interfering with your dashpot. They have a circular flat plate on the side that mates to the carb, which gets bolted to the carb first. Then the filter gets inserted onto the flat plate and secured with a single centered nut/stud.
Send a better photo of your filter. I think it might be the wrong one.

I would suggest that you are missing a spacer, perhaps ask the supplier if they forgot to include it?

Hi Chet, I'm in the process of doing the same to my 77 mgb (USA model - (converting from a Weber 32/36 DGEV). Not going to help much you being in the USA but here is the link to the company that now own the rights to'SU'. They have lots of tech stuff you can download.

You can also try Paul Hunt's UK site - lots of stuff here on just about everything MGB.

Hope it helps...

Chet,
I just walked out and looked at my HIF4 carb and conical filter. You are right, it's a tight fit between the dashpot and the bolt on the back of the filter base. The bolt actually appears to be touching the dashpot on both carbs. It also appears that there are two gaskets, not one, between the carbs and the filter. This acts as the additional spacer you mentioned.
If I were you I would simply make another gasket using the ones you have as a template, then put it together. I think it will work.

if you're using paper gaskets then the thicker cork gaskets might help provided you don't over tighten them, perhaps a dash of thread lock instead
