MG MGB Technical - late differential repair
I was given a late model differential (with roll bar towers)and wanted opinions on cost to repair it. Both wheel hubs spin freely and turn the internal gears however the input hub from the drive-shaft is frozen. The guy who gave it to me said that the drive-shaft hub stopped turning after he took off the access cover to look inside. Any ideas of what might be keeping the drive-shaft hub from turning? Tnx.

Take the backplate off and look inside. Do you mean frozen as in rock solid, will not turn even a tiny fraction in either direction? If so, likely the pinion bearing is seized up. Frozen as in some movement but won't turn, likely differential bearing seized.

It is not frozen solid. It will rock slightly when the drive hub is turned. Anyone have a cost estimate for replacing the seals, bushings and whatever bearing is seized. The diff will be dropped off at the rebuilder.

Maybe he tried to remove the pinion pin and pushed in enough to jam the ring and pinion. Clifton

I bet he did tap the roll pin in too far and it jammed it in place. Simply taking the cover off to look is not going to have any effect on it rotating. You need to 1st see if it is the roll pin. Not sure what you can do other than maybe dril it out to the point you can cause it to fall out. Richard

The roll pin just knocks straight through. What will jam it is if the pinion shaft has been drifted too far when trying to remove it, but I would expect quite a bit of movement at the drive flange, as the crownwheel can still move. Just have a look inside, it costs nothing. They rarely go wrong, apart from a clonk. For a look inside try http://www.chicagolandmgclub.com/photos/b_clunk/
