MG MGB Technical - LE Dash bulbs indicator, ignition etc

With the LE style dash ... the ones with the 80mm speedo and tacho holes the indicator bulbs (ignition & warling light too) go into tubes at the back of the dash. Anyone know what size bulbs are needed and if there is a bulb holder also needed?

Thanks,

Iwan

Iwan, according to Moss it is a GLB297 2.2W bulb

You can also get the warning light itself

80mm main gauge dashboards in the V8 and rubber bumper cars in general use AAU3857 or BCA4780A for the ignition warning and similar for the main-beam and indicators, which are a combined bulb, holder and lens e.g. http://tinyurl.com/ybdy5566

The plastic dash type may be different, but whilst GLB297 appears to be a wedge-fitting, and a replacement harness for a 1980 had wedge-type holders for the instruments, the one I took out didn't.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. What I'm really perplexed about is what the holder is to place/keep the bulbs in the tube. Perhaps it may be better if I swap these for plastic blade type versions.

Correction: V8 and RB to 76 have lens tubes held in the dash with a locking ring, and the bulbs are in bayonet holders that push into the tubes, similar to the illumination bulbs in the backs of the gauges.

It's 77 and later i.e. including LE that have the one-piece light units including lens and bulb, with spades. These holders are shaped so that they wedge into the hole, in much the same way the switches do. It might be possible to change the bulb on the original versions, if the two halves clip together. The later versions with coloured holders as in that link may not come apart in a way that they can be clipped back together again. AES supply all three types, ignition here http://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/lucas-spb354-classic-car-warning-light--lamp-red-1357-p.asp

Can't you have a look at what you have? Or are they all missing?

Thanks Paul,

This is a good website that you've highlighted; don't know why I never came across it before. I'll be buying a set of these for what I need as the bits are missing I'm afraid.

Cheers,
