MG MGB Technical - LH Overdrive rear flange nut size

I have an oil leak from the rear of my LH overdrive that needs fixing. I have read much in the archives on how to replace the seal, but I can’t find any reference to the size of the nut on the rear flange. I expect that I’ll need to buy a socket for the job, as I only have a couple of large sockets; crank pulley and the front hub nut.

I’ve looked in the BL workshop manual but there is no indication.

Does any one know what size it is?

Many thanks.

Richard,

Some years since I did mine but IIRC I used the socket fitting the crank pully. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will come along and put us right.

Richard, the prop flange nut is 1 1/8",and is 55-60lbs/ft,you will also need something to hold the prop flange to undo the nut,and if you are unlucky a puller for the prop flange if its tight on the splines, if you jack the back right up you will not lose any oil, if all goes well 1/2 hour max. A.T

And beg, borrow or buy (<£6) a seal puller. It does the job instantly rather than trying to remove it with one or a pair of screwdrivers and scoring the internal face.

Many thanks for the information.

Andy,
That's good news! I have a 1 & 1/8th socket as this is the same size as the front hub nut, and a hub puller.
I hope that I don’t need the hub puller to get the flange off; we'll see. My plan to release the nut is to put a socket on the crank pulley and wedge that socket bar against the body padded with some old rugs to protect the paint. Then, with the car in gear, heave-ho on the flange nut. If this is does not work I will make up a bracket/leaver from some old dexion to bolt to the flange.

Michael,
Thanks for the advice on the seal puller; I would not have considered this. What I would have spent on a new socket can now be spent on this.

Thanks again.

"with the car in gear"

1st gear don't forget, as this will be trying to turn the crank almost four times faster.

All parts and seal puller arrived this morning so my plan for tomorrow is set.

Paul,
Indeed!
Your point is well noted.
Thanks.

Job done. I just need to re-fill the gear box with oil and a road test to check the seal.

As a note I did not need to turn down the locking tab on the crank pulley to achieve good purchase with the socket on the crank nut. The OD nut released easily.

Hope this helps others.
