MG MGB Technical - metal finish trim on mgbgt

Can anybody tell me how to install the metal finish trim on the gt windshield. None of my books or workshop manuals cover this.

Have a look at the MGB General board. There is a current discussion on this very topic.

Also rummage the Archives as there is a lot of "soap and patience", along with blood, sweat, and tears there as well. The collective experiences on many topics on this site over the last 10+ yrs is a gold field worth mining.

I have done a lot of G.T.s in the last 39 years & what I do is grind 1/2 the lip away that sits in the rubber seal. This is one job that is a pain in the butt & anything that you can do to make it easier, is a help & this is a big help & the trim stays in place.

Have a look at http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/wn_bodyframe.htm and click on 'Screens'. New seals don't have as deep a slot as old which is why you may have to do as Glenn suggests, although mine was done without. New rubber is also very sticky so the edge of the lip has to be lifted over the trim for virtually its whole length, whereas with old it can be pushed in quite a long way.

That's very interesting he talks about fitting in new glass using the old rubber. I was wondering about this very thing, I have two new screens and one new seal but it seems my old seal is in fine shape - just the glass is damaged.

I am not really clear about the removal part, the rubber bead part and the installation part.

I've removed the metal strips before and cut out the old rubber to get the screen out, I don't see how the glass would come out leaving the old seal in place.

BS. Go to your local auto body supply store and get a plastic window seal tool. Use soapy water and keep applying it as you work the tool around the edge. Put the edge of the trim in one side and work the tool under the soapy rubber to lift it. The person who installed mine also put tape on the trim so it would not be scratched.
