MG MGB Technical - MG full of surprises

Took the oil filter off yesterday with the usual leakage of oil onto the chassis rail. On cleaning it up I noticed against the firewall a neat pile of peanuts and near the radiator a neat pile of peanut skins. I suggested to my better half she keeps the bird food elsewhere in future because I don't want my wiring chewed. She replied. with some logic, that the mouse (I assumed that is the culprit) won't chew the wiring if I feed the mouse!!! I'm not convinced.

Your wife stores the peanuts on the chassis rail?

It's probably quite a workout for the mouse running up the rail, underneath the engine mount, to the rad, to drop the skins, but then fun to slide back down if you leave a film of 20W50 on the rail.

Also check in the upper rear most corners of the engine bay, through the holes in the inner wings.

I am sure that this will start comments on how to keep rodents out of the cars so let me start, clothes dryer sheets, Irish Spring soap, and the best I have found is dog hair. I go to the dog groomer and they are glad to give me all I want. Put a hand full in a mesh bag, one in boot, one under seat and one secured under bonnet and a few on the floor. I also put it next to overhead garage door.

A supply of food is no guarantee that mice won't chew wiring. But then, I dare say it isn't your wife that would have the aggravation of dealing with it.

Regular patrols help.

I have and mice get into the Midget under the tonneau on two occasions. The chew through the container of hand wipes, drink the liquid and then perish due to glycol poisoning.

They haven't chewed the wiring so I have been lucky. I sprinkled grated Irish Spring around the garage and this seems to have kept them at bay.
