MG MGB Technical - MGB Half Shaf Bearings and seals
Gentlemen, I am sure that somebody out there must have the part numbers and dimensions of the seals and bearings for a wire wheel salisbury diff(Wheel side). Also the pinion seal if possible. Many Thanks in advance Clive

The bearings seem to be the same for both WW and disc at GHB 158. Ditto the seals at GHS 179 (replacing GHS 140 NLA). Can't help with dimensions.

Paul, thanks I will try to use these reference numbers to get the dimensions. Clive

The bearing is a single row ball bearing 3.125" OD, 1.25" ID and 0.875" wide. The seal is a double lip seal marked as 63.5, 42.85 & 9.52 in mm it measures 2.5" OD, 1.7" ID and 0.375" wide.

Chris, the above is your practice for the Salisbury axle. I am most interested if you are also using a double lipped seal for the rear wheel bearings on the later tube-type axle and what specs those may have. I ask as I have recently installed double lipped seals to my 74 axle, Rockwell/Boston Gear Pt.# AD7792E. These are somewhat different from the standard single lip seals we here in the USA get from our suppliers in that it does not have the rubber coating to the outer seal shell, but like the OE type, is a snug fit and can be sealed against the axle housing with a good sealant like Hylomar or better. both lips fit within the land on the axle shaft. I use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube for rear axle and have had a small problem with it getting past the std. seals. When working in industry, we regularly used double lipped seals to get past this problem, and so I took the chance that I might be able to find a double lipped seal and the one I found seems so far to work very well. If you have discovered another alternative, let us know, as I think that there could many others using or thinking of using the synthetic lube in their axle, and a better seal would be valuable for all.

Oops maybe I have the two axles mixed up. I guess the later one is the Salisbury. Regardless, Chris, do you have a part number and make? Might be a better choice than mine.

Bob, The seals I use are made in India for County - their part number CNA294

Thanks for the info, Chris! I find it interesting that we are supplied single lipped seals as a matter of course on this side of the pond. Is that OE spec? Or do you, on your side of the Atlantic, regularly get the double lipped seals? Or was that your own idea? Just curious, Chris, as yours is the first instance I am aware of anyone specifying a double lipped seal. And if your idea, what were your reasons to move to them?
Bob Muenchausen
Bob, As far as I know, all the seals available here are the double lipped variety - the outer lip serves to keep dust away from the inner, main sealing lip - I would imagine that a single lipped seal will wear and leak quite quickly in dusty conditions.

What you describe sounds much the same design as what I mentioned I bought above. Makes me wonder why we seem to get the single lip units? I am sure they are a bit cheaper and perhaps sell more frequently. No aspersions, but it is an odd situation considering your comments. Chris, when you have a moment, send me an email and I will respond with a couple of photos of what these I have are like and of the seals we get sold. I am just interested in your opinion about the seal I have mentioned and just an FYI of we are sold here.

In a similar vien, I have set up a number of Suzuki Samurai diffs mostly for offroad. The original pinion seal, too, is double lipped and I believe it is to exclude dust from fouling the oil seal. The after market seals are all single lipped. This poses a problem in that almost all of them leak very early in service. The factory seals never leak but are constantly on backorder. Ray

That is a good point, Ray.

Well, folks, the seal I listed above is available from an industrial bearing supply and there are perhaps more. I would suggest that if you want something closer to the factory double lipped seal, it is, at the very least, a reasonable alternative. I would also suggest that if the double lipped seal is what is SUPPOSED to be used, you also write your favorite suppliers and ask that rather indelicate question why they continue to offer us the single lipped variety if there are actually double lipped alternatives available to industrial bearing suppliers??? I hope that someone from the BMTA is reading this thread and may bring this question up at their next meeting. I cannot believe that folks on our side of the pond are totally unaware of this difference in what is offered.
