MG MGB Technical - MGB / Sierra 5 speed clutch

OK, so it's not an MGB, but I guess this will be the best board I can use.

I have a friend with an MGA (fitted MGB engine connected to Ford Sierra 5 speed gearbox) with a potential clutch contamination problem.

I need to get a centre plate located and to him so he can fix the problem. However, I don't know which plate to send him......

Easy I hear you think... take the plate to the local clutch shop and get them to match it up.
Well, yep that's all well and good but I'm here on the Queensland Gold Coast and the car is currently in Kazakhstan!

So, my question is:

What part number or clutch centre will I need to find?

I need to do this today asap, so prompt answers would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation,
Mark.

Hi Mark,

Wish I were up your way, it's starting to get cold down here.

Anyway, go to your local clutch place and get a clutch plate that fits the Ford gearbox. Now you will have the spline details. The diameter of the plate, according to Haynes, is 8" or 203mm. By matching the splines to the diameter you should get a plate that fits.
You never know, the Ford plate may well do. Its probably a good idea to get a new thrust bearing whilst you are at it.

Thanks Herb.

I can tell you the weather here today is grey with rain forcast later... :-(

So, with the HiTech conversion, what clutch release is used?

Standard MGB parts are used - GCP116 driven plate and GRB106 release bearing.

Hi Mark & Chris,

Mark, your request sounds urgent so I would expect that getting MGB bits might take too long.
I am in the process of doing a gearbox swap for a Nissan Bluebird 5 speed and I will be using the Nissan throw out mechanism. I don't know exactly what your mate has done but I would think that he would have used the Ford throw out, since that is what the box is designed for.
Because of your urgency, see if you can get the Ford throw out bearing for the box, from the clutch place. If it is wrong the expense is minimal (~$20).

So, let me get this right... the Ford Sierra splines and the MGB splines are the same....?

Contact Barry at MG Automotive Brisbane (07)3889 9652. He fits Sierra 5 speed conversion kits to MGAs and may be able to give the info you need.

Mark,

Yes!

The throw out bearing is MGB and the fork is MGB in most 5 speed conversions

Mark,

Long gone from home, I restart this thread.
Ford Sierra and MGB splines match exactly. You can either fit MGB or SIERRA on either transmission entry spindle splines.
