Hello all,

have a 1965 mk1 mgb, not a pull door handle car, obviously just missed out on that gem of a feature.

ive been offered a 1963/64 shell with doors all working, for next to nothing, before i start can you tell me or confirm to me etc, if the doors, the pull handle ones will fit on my 65 mgb ?

ive searched archives as i presumed thsi would have been raised before but couldnt find anything if there is i appologise, blame my failing eyesight

Bob, I can't confirm if the doors will fit, but I would assume they will, as no mention of hinge modifications is made in Clausager. However, the locks are totally different, and the Pull doors dont have a striker plate on the B post, but a catch that sticks out of the inner flange of the B post behind the seal. The Door cappings will also be quite different, & the door card will also need a small modification cut out for the catch/latch. This should be trimmed in a small semi circle chrome trim. Also the door cap fittings may differ on your '65 so may not transfer to the same screw holes. You would have to fill & paint the B post having removed the striker plates from your '65.
I hope this helps.

Hello,
As BG Griffin says, doors are exactly the same, only opening mecanism had been modified to comply with the new striker plate installed past 10/65 I believe. But you too need to reverse the B post attachement to the one of the picture.

No one has mentioned that the quarter lights are different on the early models as they dont have the front foot on them.

Of course Ste, and in ordre to be clearer, an early spare quarter light pic.

If the doors are good it seems a shame to 'destroy' them. Push button doors are surely more readily available? If you sold the pull handle doors you might get enough to more than pay for 2 push button doors or repair your own??

Just a thought.
Ian Buckley

I strongly support Ian Buckleys post. Pullhandle doors are scarce and SHOULD NOT be destroyed for spares.
Doors for a push button car are easier to find.

Kinda think the man wants to put the doors on in order to get the pull handles - "just missed out on that gem of a feature".

FRM, I see your point, but in reality the push button door locking system is safer and more practical than the pull handle system which has door locks much the same as the MGA.

There is no 'burst proof' feature to try to keep the doors closed in a collision that there is on the push button system. They are probably a lot easier to adjust too.
Ian Buckley

With only a couple of minutes of thought on this subject, I'd consider swapping the door skins, the pull handles, and as much of the internal connecting mechanism as necessary to work with the latter latch. I'm pretty sure they never removed attachment points so you should even be able to use the early inside handle on the latter doors.

bob,

If you just want the doors, I might be interested in the b-posts and the propshaft-tunnel.
