MG MGB Technical - Need a new leaf spring locating pin / bolt

Hi all,

I removed my axle for rebuild and found that one of the bolts that holds the spring leaves together, and also locates the axle on the spring, had corroded and snapped.

I am struggling to find anyone to supply a new one - it's not a normal bolt, as what would normally be the head is actually a cylindrical pin that goes into the rubber spring pad mount. I've tried Leacey MG, they initially thought they had them but sent me something entirely else, and after calling them back found that they don't stock that part, and also cannot get new leaf springs at all at the moment!

Does anyone know of somewhere that would carry this part as stock, or at least have drawings of it on file so they can produce one without a sample?

Or can anyone send me one in decent condition from a broken spring? My axle's back together now and the only thing stopping me fitting it back on and driving away is the lack of this bolt!

Thanks in advance,

Oliver,

The quickest method might be to take the one from the other side spring assembly.

Hi Roger,

You mean to use as a sample? I think the broken one is probably okay to use as a sample, I'm just trying to avoid the delay in some engineering shop having to measure it up, draw it, find the right material, and so on - much quicker and easier if they've made them before!

Cheers for the help,

The bolt you are talking about is called a centre bolt, try and find a local spring repairer and they may be able to help.

Sorry Olly (on two counts), yes I meant as a sample. I didn't realise you had the broken one complete. Although a shop might be more confident (interested?)working from the undamaged one.

John might have the quickest solution, if only to answers to your questions re grade/type of steel etc.

Its always the little thing that slows us down isn't it!!

All the best with it.

Olly,

I don't know about availability in the UK, or about MG in particular, but in general spring center bolts are generic, and available in several diameters and lengths. You should be able to get one at any good auto parts store or spring shop for a couple bucks (or pounds). You usually get them longer than necessary, and then cut them off after you have tightened them.

Also, if one corroded away, how is the other?

Amazing how much easier it is to find things when you know the right name!

Seems there's a few places locally that stock and supply them, will start phoning round when they open in the morning:

Thanks for the help all :o)
