MG MGB Technical - Noisy window mechanism

On my restored 73 GT, what is the cause of noisy winding operation of the window up/down movement? When the car was completed last year, all of the moving parts of the window frame were liberally coated with grease, however when the window is moved, the noise is like a loud rumbling sound. The only area that the sound can come from is the rachet and spring mechanism..would one of these be worn?
BTW, both doors have the same problem.

I would check the tightness of the glass in the runners. There is a bit of backlash in the winder and you can hold the glass and move it in that, it should be guided but perfectly free to move, you can place the glass at the middle and close to the ends of it's travel to check it. If it's too tight this would load up the regulator and make it noisy. The only noise i have ever heard from a glass regulator is when there is abig problem and it jumps a tooth.

Having a closer look this evening, it seems the the clicking sound is coming from the spring, which doesn't seem to tighten or release when the window winder is used.

I have the exact same noise with my 71 B windows. I have not been able to pinpoint the cause either.

I think I had a similar problem years ago - from memory I used a load of "spray grease" (similar to motorcycle chain grease) on the spring and the noise stopped.

Sounds like it has broken or one end become detached from its anchorage.

Problem mainly solved..took the whole assembly out, and it is the spring which has a build up of rust and dirt... when the winder is operated, the leaves of the spring just don't move smoothly together, and create the rattly noise. I removed spring, cleaned up as best as possible, inserted plenty of grease between leaves (via a small paint brush), replaced, and now 90% of the noise has gone. I also replaced the window glass while I was at it..this was a tinted version, and had become badly scratched over the years.
