MG MGB Technical - Overdrive closure plate

Watching John Twists video on YouTube he recommends using grease instead of gasket sealant when refitting the overdrive filter plate. My roadster had quite a bad oil leak from this plate and am in the process of refitting the filter gasket. I am not to confident that using grease is the best way of sealing the plate. Would welcome other views.

I tried the grease trick this spring & am impressed with the overall seal achieved. I was careful to not over tighten the bolts & made sure I swapped from side to side & front to back when nipping them up.

Best part of using grease(lightly), is that if you need to remove the plate it'll come off easy/clean and if it's ok can be reused.

People have found that oil comes out of the middle of the sandwich where the mesh is even when the faces are sealed properly. Silicone round the inner edges has been mentioned, not something I would do.

Thanks all for your feedback, I havre refitted the plate with the new wire filter using the grease method it looks OK for now but will need a decent run to tell if it’s oil tight, surprised at the quantity of oil in the gearbox/overdrive it took about 2 and a half litres of oil to bring it up to the mark. The old oil certainly needed changing it had plenty of tiny metallic fragments in it.

Hi Trevor,
The quoted capacity of the gearbox with overdrive is
6 Pints / 3.4 Litres. When i last refilled mine (also after removing & replacing the overdrive filter & low pressure valve filter) i measured putting 5.63 Pints / 3.2 Litres back in with the car absolutely level, so you seem a little bit short assuming you left the gearbox to fully drain for a while.
Cheers

As elsewhere after a drain and refill it needs to be run and the OD cycled, then the level checked again and quite a bit more will go in. Until then the OD may not work correctly.

The new gasket/filter supplied by mghive and greased seams to have done the job, it all looks quite dry now after a couple of decent runs.
Before draining the gearbox the oil level was up to the full mark so after draining I put the oil in a see through 5 litre plastic container, marked the container at the level, after cleaning out the container it was filled with fresh oil up to the mark and then pumped in. So not sure exactly how much it was but is now up to the full mark on the dipstick. Thanks to all who offered there advice.
