MG MGB Technical - Please Comment on this MGB GT

Hi. I'm over from the TD forum. I'm looking at this '72 MGB GT on ebay for a possible bid. I'd like comments on what you experts think of it, and what a reasonable price should be. I'm not sure about the metal dash. Looks odd. Any and all input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Based on those pictures it looks ridiculously cheap - depending on how the GT is valued over there.

Hate the painted dash though, it has the foam seal over the radiator in the wrong place (it should be between the rad and its mounting panel, there is a rubber strip that goes in top in that position), and I see it has a Weber or similar carb.

One question relates to age: I see it has the anti-runon oil pressure switch, but according to Clausager that wasn't provided until 1973, whereas this is described as a 72. The grille is correct for a 71 or 72, but the bonnet doesn't have the bright trim across its leading edge that it should. No head restraints.

Given its overall condition in the pictures, it does look cheap at around £2900 UK equivalent price. Here is a similar aged GT for sale in the UK at £5,900 This is on a dealer website, so you could probably get it a bit cheaper if it was being sold privately or at an auction.

Thanks folks. Bids are low now with 4 days to go, and I was looking for what the maximum price "should be" for this car. In other words, what's it worth? As for the dash, this cannot be factory correct - right?

Definitely not. American Mk2 cars had a padded face and top originally, but they split and break up in hot sun. It looks like the padding has been stripped off and the underlying metal painted, which is fair enough, but red?

Before the padded dash they were all black crackle painted metal dash with black textured vinyl dash top, and other markets continued with that for many years, until all were replaced with a black textured plastic dash.

Had it been mine I would have done it black crackle with black vinyl top, but there is no accounting for taste. There may be recovering kits out there.

As for price, that's down to what you are prepared to pay, after looking at what other examples have finally gone for - if you can, rather than asking prices.

My observations are, in addition to the above are;
The underseal on the castle rail looks a touch dodgy, when compared to the floors. There is evidence of flaking rust visible through the drain hole.Plus the jacking point is rusty, which begs the question, "why would you leave it like that?? " Scared of scraping perhaps???
The vendor has left for the next owner the, not inconsiderable aggravation, of fitting the windscreen aluminium trim.
