MG MGB Technical - Quarter vent repairs

I would appreciate any advice about how to remove and replace the glass and the small pivot bolt in a quarter vent. I don't know how to start removing the glass without damaging the frame or the glass.

Also, through lack of use I have one frozen quarter vent latch. Any ideas on how to free it up?

In the first case the end of the pivot bolt sticks downwards into the door and has a sleeve and spring under a Nylock nut to adjust the tension on the swivelling frame, allowing it to stay where put when driving along. You might be able to undo this with the 1/4-light frame in-situ, but the pin will probably shear. They are avaialable, but you need to prise the glass out of the swivelling frame to replace it. I can't remember how I did this bit, maybe shredding the rubber strip and gentle levering. The rubber strip is also available. This is flat and so has to be formed into a U-channel as well as being bent through greater than 90 degrees to slot into the frame. I didn't see how this would happen so cut darts at the corner, but another has said in the past they managed it without. Even with darts and using a wooden sash-cramp arrangement to squeeze the glass in, when I undid the cramp it started squeezing back out again, so I left it clamped up for a few days and it has been fine ever since (18 years).

On the stuck latch, the usual releasing agents, failing that you might be able to drive the roll-pin out and remove the handle from the shaft, allowing you to open the 1/4-light and remove it and the glass, and freeing or replacing the swivel. But then again the handle could be well stuck to the shaft, but that (the handle) could perhaps be ground off. Both handle and the shaft/bracket it attaches to should be available, albeit at about £20 Sterling each!

Removing the glass is quite easy, you can just slightly open the two ends of the frame, apply pressure rather than actually move them, and the glass will pull out easily. The U section rubber seal then just peels out, and is a 1 minute job to replace. Other areas around here are a little more challenging.

I had the door card out on the drivers side for something else so took these. This is a general view. I would expect the 2 long securing nuts to be rusted solid.

And I am pleased I took the time to peer into this corner as after looking at this I got the waxoyl out!

Stan raises a good point. Everything gets rusted solid. When you put it all back together use some kind of anti seize. I use a copper grease on things.

Stan's 2nd pic nicely shows the spring, Nyloc nut and special pin that the 1/4-light pivots on - albeit upside-down. It's between the two deep nuts in the first pic.

I have removed a few of these. The larger nuts never seem to be the problem, remove them and remove the quarter lite assembly. The spring/nut WILL be rusted solid. it was on all four windows I did. Heavy amounts of PB Blaster and a good box wrench once you get the nut to move a mili fraction work it back and forth, slowly, don't let it heaat up or it will snap off. It took me a couple days worth because I did not want to snap another. They say that pivot pin is replacable but on the ones I did on my Gt they wer part of the glass frame.
